AI-Assisted Development of a Campus CERT Proposal

As a faculty member and disaster preparedness advocate, my goal has been to increase community awareness and resilience in response to disruptions caused by natural or human-made disasters. This commitment has been especially meaningful since the loss of my brother on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center, while also reflecting a long-standing interest in disaster preparedness prior to that event.

Colleges and universities across the nation have experienced operational disruptions resulting from disaster events, leading many institutions to establish Campus Community Emergency Response Teams (Campus CERTs). To support best practices in developing an organized and inclusive campus response, I carefully curated the source materials from which the proposal would be generated and tailored.

Cleveland State instituted a new process for committee formation. Using the current committee formation documents, the most recent Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training Participant Manual (2019), and the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, I directed AI to generate a proposal that included all of the required components.

The resulting proposal saved many hours that would otherwise have been spent locating information, organizing content, and formatting a professional Word document for senior leadership review.

I am sharing the proposal in draft form as a PDF.
